At 15, Gary worked as a commercial artist, painting signs on retail store windows with his friend Kieth Kenefick, while attending La Habra High. After graduating, he went to San Diego State to study Art. It was during a modeling assignment at The Lakewood Mall, where Gary was encouraged by photographer Sergio Bonilla to try acting.
