Ai Sugiyama is a Japanese former professional tennis player. She reached the world No. 1 ranking in women's doubles on the WTA Tour and had a career-high singles ranking of world No. 8, achieved on February 9, 2004. In her career, she won six singles and 37 doubles titles, including three Grand Slam titles and one Grand Slam mixed doubles title. Sugiyama held the all-time record, for both male and female players, for her 62 consecutive Grand Slam main draw appearances, until she was surpassed by Roger Federer at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. Sugiyama retired at the end of the 2009 tennis season after the Toray Pan Pacific Open, held in her native country, Japan.
