The third son of Dr. Carolyn Ann Thomas and Frederick Jarrett Flowers. Born in Phoenix, Arizona and lived in several states growing up. Nelson joined the Army National Guard/Reserve. He reached the grade of Sergeant and received an Honorable Discharge. Nelson received his Bachelor's degree from Southwest Missouri State University (Now Missouri State University) . Nelson has two children from a previous marriage. Nelson had a stroke in August of 2019 and is legally blind.
