Nicholas J. Carroll is an independent filmmaker dedicated to creating films in a collaborative environment. He started working on films when he was ten years old as a PA at Refractory Films, with his sister (Julia J.C. Blau) directing. Nicholas learned most of the craft growing up with Refractory, and earned his way to a partnership in Refractory Films by the end of his tenure there. By the end of his college years studying psychology at the University of Connecticut, Nicholas (or "Sunshine" as he was known by then) decided to pursue directing. He moved to Chicago, Illinois in October 2009 to seek out others interested in creating films based on collaboration and the practices of long form improvisation. Shortly after moving to Chicago, he met Andrew Hobgood, the Artistic Director of The New Colony. Since Andrew's goals for The New Colony lined up with Nicholas' personal goals, Nicholas joined that company to develop a film department. With The New Colony, Nicholas produced and directed two short films, "So Many Days" and "Script Comes Last", an online series in residency at the University of Chicago "B-Side Studio", and promotional content.
