Massimo Benvegnu was born in Padova, Italy, and majored in Film Studies at the University of Bologna. He started his career working for producer Ronald Shedlo and screenwriter Christopher Hampton on developing feature film projects in both Italy and London. He then turned his interest in producing documentaries, which screened at several festivals worldwide. Along with his career as a filmmaker, Massimo has a long established reputation as a programmer, curator and film critic. He was the Head of the Programming and Access to Collections Commission of FIAF, the International Federation of Film Archives, between 2017 and 2019. A graduate of the Archimedia Training Course in 1997 and recipient of the Haghefilm Fellowship Award in 2010, Massimo authored several books and essays and also worked for major festivals such as Venice and Locarno. He wrote the first monograph ever published in Italy about Australian filmmaker Peter Weir.
