Phillip Martin studied composition at the University of Michigan with Leslie Bassett and William Albright and at the University of Denver with Normand Lockwood. For most of his career, Martin has concentrated on chamber music, particularly music for cello and piano. More recently, he has begun focusing on opera. Hartford Opera Theater premiered his first opera, Tom Sawyer, in April 2010. His second opera, Fall Back, was premiered by Hartford Opera Theater in November 2010; and his third, The Family Plan, in November 2011. As of 2013, Martin lives in Scarsdale, New York and is the Chief Technology Officer for Gargoyle Strategic Investments, a hedge fund based in Englewood, New Jersey.
