Carmichael Raphael David Reid was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He moved to Winnipeg and studied at University of Manitoba Environmental Design Faculty. The son of a Master Carpenter, he majored in Architecture before switching to Film Studies and History. He wrote and filmed his first short film, Nightlights (2008) after breaking into the Film Editing Department to cut it. He had 45 minutes of footage yet edited it down to 3 minutes to show it for class. He was the only one who made a movie for marks. Upon this revelation, he eventually dropped out of Art School to try his luck in the film industry. He worked several jobs simultaneously; the graveyard shift at UPS and at The Uptown, a now defunct movie theatre in Calgary to support his Filmmaking ambition. After browsing the local classifieds, he found work in Calgary as a Visual Effects Production Assistant and Actor on a "B" Movie titled The Dominant Gene (2011) in 2010. Based in Calgary, he shot around the West Coast. Directing Low Budget Music Videos for Artists such as Daega Sound, Grand Analog and The Beatnuts. In 2011, he reluctantly moved to Vancouver to become a VFX Production Assistant on the first 3D picture in the Final Destination franchise "Final Destination 5 3D" (2011). He also got to PA on Nick Cassavetes' 2012 dramedy, "Yellow." Which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival. After being terminated in Vancouver he shot a short film on an i-Phone while being arrested in East Hastings, Vancouver titled "London Fog" (2011). He entered it into Ridley Scott's YouTube Film Festival. Charges were laid but were ultimately dismissed. During a hiatus from filmmaking. Carmichael became an selling-for-money author by typing and penning a personal fan favorite e-book titled "Teen's Guide to The Real World of Film-Making." The book covered the art and motivation of creativity for teenagers who are interested in New Media and Film. This book is available upon Demand and has been updating with new material daily. It lays out the rewards and consequences of doing it the real way in film without compromising your vision too much. But, most importantly, it informs the reader about the importance of Open-Mindedness, Marketing and Audience building in today's digital and connected world. In 2018, Carmichael returned to shoot two double-shorts titled Balconies (2018) and Scent of SOLD! (2018) literally in his own backyard. What a guy you know. So resourceful. He continues to talk trash on Facebook like he owns it. I got to chat with him about what is next. He said that Balconies/Scent of SOLD was a feeler out of what's next. He has projects ready to go for the next 20 years. He isn't worried about money either as his Accounting skills are above reproach. But did warn me about Revenue and the state of Entertainment as a whole with technology companies slurping up most of the profits from the "FREEness" of content today. Another topic for a movie? Keep you updated.
