Kayley Taber has been a criminal justice advocate and innovator for nearly 25 years. Her entire career she has focused on prosecuting the most difficult and challenging criminal cases. She has made it her priority to target child predators and recidivist sex offenders, with ground breaking, appellate court approved, successful criminal prosecutions. She is a NC Board Certified Expert in Criminal Law and a trainer for law enforcement, medical providers, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, and attorneys. She is a proud "double" Tar Heel. In 1988 she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in political science. Kayley then spent time overseas and on the west coast accompanying her husband Jeff while he served with the U.S. Marine Corps. During her time "in service" as a military spouse, Kayley worked as a substance abuse counselor, and an emergency services worker for the American Red Cross. Kayley returned home to North Carolina and put herself through law school, working for student affairs orienting new law students. She received her law degree from UNC in 1996, graduating with honors. For the last 14 years Kayley has managed the staff and attorneys for the Chatham branch of the Orange/Chatham District Attorney's Office. Prior to that, she worked in Orange County, where she was a key community partner in establishing the Mental Health diversion court (Community Resource Court). CRC is designed to provide holistic solutions for the mentally ill who intersect with the criminal justice system. Kayley's innovative criminal justice advocacy began with her very first job as an assistant district attorney. In 1997 Kayley created and implemented a comprehensive Domestic Violence Unit for Lee, Harnett and Johnston Counties. The program was a first of its kind in NC designed to improve outcomes for victims of domestic violence. Kayley resides in Pittsboro with Jeff, her husband of 33 years, three German Shepherds, two cats, and a rotating cast of foster dogs sponsored through C. A. R. E., a local animal welfare non-profit. Jeff and Kayley specialize in fostering hard-to-place larger dogs, many with trauma histories.
