Sprinter and hurdler Thomas Patrick "Tom" Lavery was born on December 18, 1911 in Scotland. Lavery represented South Africa in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany in the 110m hurdles and the 4x100m men's relay, but failed to reach the finals. However, Tom went on to win a gold medal in the 120 yards hurdles at the 1938 British Empire Games and a bronze medal in the same event at the 1950 British Empire Games. In addition, Lavery placed fourth in the 100 yards event at the 1938 British Empire Games. Tom died at age 75 on February 7, 1987 in Germiston, Gauteng, South Africa.
