Shoryu Nan was born on November 23, 1912 in Suncheon, Jeollanam, South Korea. Shoryu received high education in Japan. Moreover, Nan represented Japan in the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany, where he won the bronze medal in the men's marathon with a final standing of two hours, thirty-one minutes, and forty-two seconds. In the wake of his Olympic triumph Shoryu went on to work for the Korean Sporting Association. Nan died at age 88 on February 20, 2001.
