Confessions of a Cinematic Pirate: My Latest Find, "Rosalie"

I plead guilty to setting sail, like a real pirate in search of cinematic treasures.
And every time I come across films inspired by true events, I feel that my adventure has been a success, regardless of their rating or popular reception: I enjoy this guilty pleasure without restrictions. Few people know it, but it's time to confess.
I just need to see it. And if it's from a budding director, even better!
My latest find is "Rosalie."

Are you ready to challenge your own perceptions of beauty?
"Rosalie" isn't just a movie; it is an invitation to reflect on what we consider normal and beautiful. Through its intimate narrative and authentic representation, the film challenges us to look beyond appearances and find beauty in authenticity and difference.

Plot highlights

We are in France, 1870. Rosalie (Nadia Tereszkiewicz ) lives with her father (Gustave Kervern). And she has hidden a terrible secret since her earliest childhood. She suffers from hirsutism, a condition that causes excessive hair growth in women. Her father has taken her to countless medical consultations. He has tried everything. But nothing frees little Rosalie from this condition.
Therefore, he decides to start shaving every inch of her body, hoping to give her a "normal" life.
As she grows up, Rosalie's desires lead him to arrange a marriage with Abel (Benoît Magimel ), a café owner with too many debts. In exchange for a dowry that is sufficiently interesting, the man accepts the proposal.
Abel, carries the physical and emotional scars of his past in the war.
When he meets her, he finds nothing but beauty, candor and her irreversible desire to become a mother as soon as possible.
Abel agrees, not very convinced, to this wish, but understands that he cannot refuse, since Rosalie's request is more than logical and legitimate.

On their wedding night, he asks her to take off her nightgown. To his surprise and horror, the young woman's body is completely covered in hair.

His anger is enormous. He cannot hide the disgust that this causes him. And he orders her to leave.
However, Rosalie is not going to give up so easily the possibility of making her dream of being a mother come true.
"A child is the only being capable of loving you unconditionally," Rosalie has maintained since that first conversation she had with Abel.
However, Rosalie is wrong. And it happens that love, with its overwhelming, tenacious and senseless force, blossoms in the most unexpected moments and spirits.
Rosalie, with her unbreakable smile and big eyes that talk, laugh, express internal storms, decides to reveal her true nature and stop shaving.
A crowd gathers at Abel's café to check if the rumors about this singular woman are true. Upon seeing her, silence falls. Then, one of the bystanders remarks about her beard. A young man approaches and gently tugs at her. The beard remains in place. “You are beautiful, Rosalie,” he murmurs.

The story has only just begun.
I invite you, dear Peliplater, to discover and be amazed by this beautiful work.

Technical details

This historical drama, a French-Belgian co-production, was directed with the exquisite sensitivity of Stéphanie Di Giusto , who had already demonstrated this in her debut film "La danseuse" in 2016. The film is inspired by the true story of bearded women who challenged the social conventions and beauty standards of their time.
"Rosalie" (2023) is truly an intimate, almost secret and immersive experience.

Let's spy a trailer:

The rigorously realized period setting provides a truly striking and delicate framework of verisimilitude.
The script, co-written and successfully by Jacques Fieschi, Sandrine Le Coustumer and Stéphanie Di Giusto, has a real and tangible imprint. You feel that these are the right words, you don't need to add or subtract anything.
It is impeccable and highly enjoyable, which is appreciated, with the photography by Christos Voudouris .
Hania Rani 's music will make this particular journey that spans 115 min. an exploration worth doing.

If you want another perspective on hirsutism, Marco Ferreri “The Appe Woman” (1964) may be an interesting contribution.

Final brushstrokes

"Rosalie" is a profoundly human work, which questions our own capacities to connect with what really matters, despite the "accidents" that cover the essence of being.
It challenges our perceptions and invites us to see beyond.
With an open mind and a critical spirit, we broaden our understanding of the world. Our environment is enriched. This personal growth allows us to perceive the beauty of the authentic.
It encourages us to rediscover the other, to redefine him or her from dignity and sincere embrace in love. Because when we allow ourselves to love and accept ourselves, we can truly see the other in all their glory.
And there love has the opportunity to penetrate us, to grant us a state of grace that will make the content of each being shine.
Recognize and accept our own oddities, which don't really bother anyone, and forget about labels, which serve no purpose. Have you ever come across a movie that made you question your own beliefs about beauty and normality?
Let me know in the comments.
