Giving it her all, but unable to produce her once "melodious" voice.
A 10-minute spasm, losing control of her body, struggling to breathe—Celine Dion's latest documentary, I Am: Celine Dion, is now streaming.
The 100 minutes fly by for the audience, but for Celine, it's a prolonged journey battling illness. Beyond the resilience against pain, it's about how she navigates the irreconcilable conflicts between life and her greatest passion. For the first time, she openly exposes her vulnerabilities, allowing the camera to capture her broken and negative emotions.

1. Darkest Moments
Before the documentary's official release, glimpses of Celine's struggles were already apparent from her interview on NBC's flagship show, Today. In the interview, Celine revealed that her illness forced her to sing through her nose, causing panic, exacerbating spasms, and creating uncertainty during live performances—a symptom that began in her 2008 performances.
In 2008, during the Taking Chances World Tour, Celine noticed discomfort—she felt her voice slipping out of control on stage. As a singer, the first step was to consult an ENT specialist. But the doctors examined her vocal cords from all angles, and everything appeared normal.

This uncertainty and helplessness haunted Celine, but doctors couldn't pinpoint a cause. She soldiered on, completing her tour. Each time she took the stage, she battled her discomfort. The audience saw her passionate performances, unaware of her suffering—her body stiffened, walking became difficult.
To avoid worrying her family and team, she chose to conceal her illness, enduring it silently. It wasn't until the global pandemic in 2020 forced her to pause that she faced her decade-long struggle. But worse news followed—after extensive tests, doctors diagnosed her with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, SPS causes muscle stiffness and heightened sensitivity to noise, touch, and emotional distress, triggering muscle spasms. Symptoms can make walking difficult, hinder daily activities, and even lead to death.

The documentary captures the stark reality. After one recording session, Celine fell into a spasm, facing death: "The last 20 minutes are truly heartbreaking." Director Erin Taylor recalls this episode as "accidentally recorded."
"It was her first successful two-day recording session in four years. She recorded for 10 minutes, sounded great—and then things quickly worsened." After recording two songs, Celine suddenly entered a prolonged spasm, her breathing inaudible.
In the silent footage, everything appears brutally real—images surpass words. After the spasm subsided, Celine returned to her familiar, optimistic, and strong self. She left her room, humming “Who I Am” in the dark, a soft yet powerful melody. Hours of struggle condensed into a few weighty minutes on screen.
The documentary ends with Celine's declaration, "I won't stop," capturing the girl from a small Canadian town who always saw music as her life's essence.

2. Facing the Illness
After learning of her severe illness, Celine Dion did not shy away but faced it bravely. In interviews, she detailed the disease's impact on her daily life. "Sometimes, it feels like someone is choking you, making it impossible to speak loudly or softly. It can even cause rib fractures."
Despite these challenges, Celine remains optimistic, crediting her three sons for giving her immense strength during the toughest times. "They've already lost a father; I don't want them to be scared again," she said. She patiently explained her condition to her children, helping them understand her efforts to coexist with the illness, assuring them, "Mom won't leave you."
Celine's tight protection of her family life is partly to shield her children (she has three sons with her late husband and manager, René Angélil, who died of throat cancer in 2016). Having endured years of tabloid invasions, Celine knows how and when to protect her private life. "I've 'died' many times in the media," she humorously said. However, she noted that the most troublesome part of these health speculations was explaining them to her children. "I must remind them not to believe everything they see or hear."

To protect her children, she felt it necessary to make this documentary. "This documentary was made with great respect," she said, adding, "I allowed Taylor to capture scenes that might be hard for people to accept, but this is my reality." In a way, the documentary is a love letter to her fans—their support has been the light at the end of her tunnel.
"I wanted to present this journey through a documentary because it's not something that can be quickly resolved. My experiences have no quick fixes. It's not just about vocal training and Pilates; it's a comprehensive recovery involving body, voice, emotion, and spirit."
She expressed in an interview, “I hope this story is told gracefully. I also want my fans and those who care about me to know the whole truth.”

3. Hope Amidst Hardship
Filmed over 8 to 10 months, the documentary captures Celine's most challenging period, and visibly, she's improving before the camera. At the documentary's premiere, she sang Courage with fans and security staff, valuing audience support as everything to her.
Celine is prepared not to sing again but doesn't rule out finding a new singing style or another way to connect with music. The priority is to "keep moving forward."
In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Taylor asked if audiences wanted to see Celine trying things in the studio or elsewhere. The answer was a resounding yes. If there are expectations for Celine now, it's that she finds her most comfortable and healthy way forward.
Discipline, pursuit of perfection, and valuing work above all are qualities of a great artist—but these can also crush those we once thought indestructible. Erin Taylor's filming style is noteworthy, combining artistry with raw reality. Through empathetic lens work, she captures Celine's strength and vulnerability.
I Am: Celine Dion received rare unanimous 100% positive reviews from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Celine hopes the film shows the real her and inspires others to face life's challenges through her story.

About her current health and life status, Celine said calmly, "It's been a heavy burden on my shoulders, but much of that weight has lifted. Now I can focus on reality. It's great—my happiness is back." She hopes the documentary raises awareness and encourages those with similar symptoms to seek early treatment.
"I hope this documentary doesn't scare people but awakens their awareness. I waited 17 years; don't be like me." She added that the film is dedicated to those who shone light during her darkest times. "What is my life's mission? To be a singer? A spokesperson? A mother? Or all of the above? I believe today marks the beginning of the second half of my life. It's a song I've never sung but will be the most important song I sing."
Lastly, we wish this brave warrior who has faced immense challenges the strength to overcome her illness and recover soon. Just like her timeless and moving songs, she herself has become a legend.
