John Schuyler, happily married Wall Street lawyer, is appointed as special diplomatic representative to England. By an unhappy accident, his wife and child can't come along; but on the ship with him is "The Vampire," a "notorious woman" who lives off a succession of men she has seduced and ruined. Slighted by Mrs. Schuyler, she has set her sights on the husband. Two months later, we find the Fool languishing with the mistress who has him enmeshed in her toils. Rosa (Theda Bara), a peasant girl living with her father in an Italian village, is engaged to Luigi, a simple and pious young man. However, when Pietro, leader of the New York Comorra, returns to his old home, Rosa goes to New York with him and they are followed by Luigi. In New York, Pietro, in a boastful moment, declares that he will steal the jewels of the Madonna as a proof of his love for Rosa and Luigi is told of this by Rosa. He goes into the church and brings back the jewels and Rosa is dazed at the enormity of Luigi's sacrifice and yields to him. Later when the loss of the jewels is discovered, Rosa, wearing them, makes her way to the headquarters of the Camorra, where Pietro, upon seeing her, leaves her, and Rosa, made with terror, rushes into the street and is caught by the infuriated mob. Luigi stabs himself at the foot of the Madonna's altar.

Stephen Orry is an Icelandic vagabond. Rachel, the daughter of the governor of the province, is attracted to him. Her father, who is against the relationship, drives her from home, and she marries Orry. But she cannot make a man out of Orry, who runs off to sea. Rachel supports herself and her son Jason, while Orry begins a new life on the Isle of Man. He marries Liza Killey and they have a son named Sunlocks. When Liza mistreats Sunlocks, Orry takes him away to the governor of the Isle for safekeeping. After Rachel dies, Jason sets out for revenge against his father. His half-brother Sunlocks sets out for Iceland to find Rachel and Jason to make reparations, while Jason comes to the Isle of Man. While there, Jason saves his father from drowning, and after his father dies from a natural death, he turns his desire for revenge against Sunlocks. But when Sunlocks becomes a political prisoner, Jason forgoes his revenge and dies in place of Sunlocks.

James Kelly and Tom Baldwin, two old pals, agree that their children, Larry and Helen, should marry. During the month before the marriage, Larry plans to have a fling and is smitten by a woman he meets on a train. Not realizing that the woman is Helen, he takes a job on the ranch next to hers, and she poses as a maid to sound out her fiancee's character. Tom exposes a group of cattle thieves but is accused of murder and makes a run for it. His horse catches up with a train, and when he jumps through the window, he finds himself facing his future wife.

After four men have proposed to Adele Moore, a beautiful young woman whose father wishes her to marry for financial reasons, she is undecided as to the one she prefers and decides to consult a fortune teller. Gazing into the crystal ball, Adele witnesses an enactment of the life she would lead with each one of them and is shocked to find every marriage ending in heartache. The lawyer proves faithless, the banker steals money, the doctor neglects her, and the poor clerk suggests that she sacrifice her honor to his threatening employer. Dismissing all of them, Adele moves to Vermont and opens a store. Business is slow until a passing salesman assumes management of the store and transforms it into a booming success. Happy at last, Adele agrees to marry him.

Rancher John Stafford hires daredevil cowboy Ned Ferguson to hunt down cattle rustlers. En route to the ranch Ned is bitten by a rattlesnake and nursed by Mary Radford, who is writing a Western novel. Ranch foreman Dave Leviatt is jealous of Mary's interest in Ned and convinces Stafford that Mary's brother Ben is the head of the rustlers. Leviatt shoots Ben in the back, and Ben is convinced that Ned is responsible. Mary will have nothing to do with Ned, even after he rescues her from a cattle stampede. Finally, Leviatt is captured and confesses the truth, and Mary accepts Ned as her real, rather than fictional, hero.

In a prologue, the evolution of banditry from the road agent to the modern automobile bandit is depicted. In the main story, Marian Calvert, traveling along the California coast with her uncle and his family to a weekend party, becomes infatuated with the infamous Lincoln Highwayman when he robs them of their jewelry and leaves in his high powered auto. At the party, when late arrival Jimmy Clunder drops one of the stolen jewels, Marian's suspicions are aroused even though he explains he found it on the road. Steele, a secret service man at the party, who is in love with Marian, vows to capture the criminal, while the Governor of California appoints Captain Claver from the Sacramento police and his assistant to catch him. When Jimmy, with the help of his very intelligent dog Spike, holds up Steele and Marian to prove Steele's incompetence, Marian, convinced that Jimmy is the thief, falls more in love with him. After Jimmy, masquerading as a paymaster of a copper mine, captures the real thieves, the policemen, he wins a reward and Marian's love.

Discovering that his partner has been selling fake oil stock, Hugh Chilson, realizing that the law will consider him guilty also, flees to South America where he is reported to have committed suicide. Receiving notice of her husband's death, Chilson's wife Claudia marries her old friend Cyrus Brainerd, unaware that he is having an affair with his brother's wife Lily. One day, Curtis is thrown from a horse and is paralyzed, doomed to a life of endless pain. He lies on his bed, calling for death. On the day of the accident, Chilson returns after having made a fortune, but informed of his wife's remarriage, refrains from contacting her. Meanwhile, Claudia, out of pity, places a pistol by Curtis' bed and he takes his life. Upon learning of Chilson's return, Curtis' brother Robert interprets Claudia's act as murder until she silences him by showing him a letter written by Lily to Curtis. Chilson, learning that Claudia is once again free, goes to his wife and the pair are happily reunited.

Lloyds of London hires Jim Landers to investigate Captain Machen and find out whether or not he is scuttling his ships to collect insurance money. In order to avoid suspicion, Landers allows himself to be shanghaied aboard the Dorothy Low on her next voyage where he discovers the brutality of First Mate Erickson. Despite the brutality on board, Landers remains skeptical of accusations of scuttling because Machen has brought his daughter Laura on the voyage. However, the ship is scuttled en route and Erickson dies. Machen, Laura, Landers and some crew members survive, but Machen is critically injured and, on his deathbed, confesses that he had previously scuttled a ship because it was carrying arms to Mexico. The case satisfactorily resolved, Landers realizes that he has fallen in love with Laura.

Thomas Edinburgh, financial dictator of Marysville, is secretly in love with Carol, wife of the Reverend Luther McCall, and produces evidence that her husband was once an embezzler. Leaving for Cleveland, the minister meets his twin brother, Lefty, the real embezzler, who is evading the law. Luther is killed in a train wreck, and Lefty, assuming Luther's identity and carrying on the latter's ministerial work, brings about his own conversion and that of his former pal, Buster. He thwarts Edinburgh's plans by stealing the prison record, and after learning Lefty's story Carol comes to love him.
