In 1771, the King Carlos III instated the Lottery in Spain with the "Loteria Primitiva" system of five numbers. In 1812, in the middle of the war between Spain and France, in Cadiz, it was instated the nowadays format of two sets of balls, one for the numbers and the other for the prizes. Since then, the Special Christmas Lottery has been the official beginning of Christmas in Spain and it has become a tradition. In 1892 the lottery got the name it has nowadays. After reaching the radio in the end of the 1920s, in 1957 it was broadcasted for the very first time live on TV. There is a first prize known as "El Gordo" (the Big One), which for years gave the winner 300.000.000 pesetas. From 2002 to 2004, when the euro arrived, the prize was set to 2.000.000 euros. In the edition of 2005, it was increased to 3.000.000 euros. There are also lower prizes, one second and one third prize, two fourth prizes and four fifth prizes, since 2005 there are eight five prizes, and there's also the so-called "pedrea", 1.774 prizes of 1.000 euros, which in the past were 150.000 pesetas. Since the beginning, the children of the San Idelfonso School are the ones that sing the numbers and the prizes. Until 1983, only boys could sing them. It was in 1984 when girls were allowed to sing the prizes.
