Nudity and sex in each episode. Many views, often lengthy, of breasts. A few shorter views of full frontal female nudity. For males, toplessness and butts only. Sex scenes are occasionally very dynamic with vigorously bouncing breasts or thrusting butts.

Prostitution is depicted frequently by women soliciting men who visit a garden for that purpose. That economic plights and a patriarchal social structure are causing so many women to go into prostitution is discussed more than once. Infidelity also plays a major role in various plot threads.

Brief fights involving punches and head-butting are shown a few times.

Frequent drinking, not uncommonly to excess. Some smoking, more of pipes than other formats. Laudanum, which is opium in alcohol, plays a major role in the plot and leads to death.

A very intense death and funeral scene of a major character.

Women's pain at being deceived or betrayed in romantic relationships is sometimes intense.
