Widowed when her husband Steven was killed two years ago in a special ops mission in Syria, Dr. Rachel Hunt, also then in the military in the battle zones of the Middle East as a trauma surgeon and then as a death investigator, but based in Germany, returns stateside with her twin teenage offspring, Chloe and Matthew, to live with her father, Rick Davis, all three needing to make the adjustments to civilian life as Rachel works in a general family practice, and to life without Steven. That transition for Chloe and Matthew will be different in their different personalities, Chloe outgoing, and Matthew introverted. Rachel's life takes a turn when she discovers one of her patients, sixty-one year old Ross Alexander, having the health of a man twenty years his junior but overly concerned about the imminent results of an MRI, dead inside his home, the coroner deeming the death by natural causes. Hearkening back to her military work, Rachel can't help but think that he didn't pass by natural causes, but she has trouble convincing anyone in authority, including the coroner and police detective Jack Quinn, to investigate. As she discovers more about Ross' life, including his family life with a married brother, Leonard Alexander, and his professional life as the owner of a chain of newspapers where he has made some enemies in exposé type stories, she is able to convince Jack into investigating the possibility that he could have been murdered. In the process, Rachel has to decide if she's yet ready to open herself up to another man, namely Jack.
