Demand for housing in Washington, DC is going through the roof. That's why homebuilder Jay Austin designed a custom 140-square-foot house for only $50,000. Despite its size, Austin's "Matchbox" house is stylish, well-built, and it includes all the necessities of life. There's even a hot tub outside. But tiny houses come with one enormous catch: they're illegal, in violation of several codes in Washington D.C.'s Zoning Ordinance. Austin's comfy, affordable home violates regulations that stipulate minimum lot size, minimum room sizes, alleyway widths, and mandatory parking minimums. Will a dense thicket of rules and regs prevent Jay Austin from being the architect of his own life?
