In the United States at the end of the 19th century, a mysterious lady named Lady Nolwenn Hellaine arrives in the quiet town of Woodsburgh (in upstate New York) accompanied by her faithful elderly, but creepy butler Goodwill. Although the community is actually threatened by the Woodsburgh Devil and other non-human presences, the young lady's life soon crosses paths with other locals, including Rory, an orphaned child, her siblings Jonathan and Betsy, and Lady Swanson, a noblewoman struggling with past mistakes and haunted by nightmares of a mine explosion in Woodsburgh years before, in which her husband and other victims lost their lives. During her stay in Woodsburgh in order to fit in socially, Hellaine, although almost insensitive to every emotional stimulus, will discover that she is deeply attached to that town to the point of embarking on a sort of spiritual journey in search of her true identity and to put an end to an evil that never seems to stop and that continues to terrorize the local civilization.
