A protest against the communist government was planned for August 31, 1982, the second anniversary of the Gdansk Accords. They demanded the release of all internees and the restoration of the legal status of the Solidarity Trade Union. More than 300,000 people across the country demonstrated on that day. These were the largest street demonstrations in Polish history.
