The Presentation Sisters and Sisters of Mercy of St. John's, Newfoundland are mostly invisible to the public eye. For a number of years, there have been no new nuns to join the convents. The vast majority of the sisters are elderly women and they've given up looking for new recruits. They're no longer involved in the school system, where they once found "the calling" as young women themselves. But they are still actively fighting for the rights of prisoners and women, feeding the poor, and providing care to those who need it. Even as their numbers dwindle, there are still many people who rely on the work and good nature of the Sisters - the needy who receive goods, clothing and health care, prisoners who are counseled while behind bars and past members of the convent who now find themselves requiring elderly care. The Incredible Vanishing Sisters follows the lives of present-day nuns in their soon-to-be-abandoned convents, community health centre and private medical wards. They are a closed institution that remains a mystery to the general public - and one that will soon close its doors forever.
