Anaïs (Lydia Faure) is a 14 year old girl who has been living in Kyoto with her French mother (Marguerite Paget). She is attending junior high school but she is also studying Noh Theatre - a form of classical Japanese drama. Anaïs has never met her Japanese father, though. He had abandoned the family before Anaïs was born. Being an adolescent girl, she often fights with her mother who insists that her daughter's goal should be to study at a university in France. When her mother continues to ignore Anaïs' questions about her father and threatens to cut her Noh lessons, Anaïs runs away from home. In the quest to find her father, she embarks on a long journey. Traveling by hitchhiking, by train or by ferry she encounters many interesting people on her way. The answer seems to lie on a remote island in Southern Japan.
