C H Hermansson was one of three leading Swedish communists who attended the 20th Party Congress in 1956. The showdown with Stalin came as a complete surprise to him and he was surprised at how openly people now spoke about Stalin's terror. Nikita Khrushchev's criticism of Stalin came to have great significance for developments in the Soviet Union in the coming years.
