In 1307, a ruthless Austrian Habsburg king (Sir Ben Kingsley) occupies the Swiss cantons, with his tax collectors oppressing and abusing the local population. One farmer, driven by a thirst for revenge, flees across the landscape, finding only one person willing to help him: William Tell (Claes Bang, also featured in this year's Festival with Bonjour Tristesse). Recently returned from his service with the Knights Templar in the Holy Land, Tell seeks a peaceful life with his wife (Golshifteh Farahani), whom he met during his travels. However, when the cruelty of the Habsburg court pushes him too far, Tell is compelled to take up arms and lead the fight against the tyranny.
