In a near-future jail, elderly Quebecois political prisoners are serving life sentences. Men and women, they're dying one by one in troubled circumstances. We soon realize the deaths are all connected to the youngest prisoner in the wing, No. 973 (55), and the strange tapeworm he carries. Eventually, No. 973 denies all political convictions in front of a judge in court and is released. Once outside, he discovers that the world he used to know is no longer the same - all he's fought for his whole life is gone. He then reconnects with political resistance fighters who consider his enormous tapeworm the repository of the psyches, memory, and knowledge of their "martyrs" and decide to extract it. But the creature decides otherwise.
