On the day Denis and Angela profess their love for each other, Denis is witness to the vicious accident that takes Angela's life. Now in constant wonder and mourning of what could've been Denis enters a spiral of mania, depression and loneliness, isolating himself from the world around him. In his sleep he hears the voice of Angela calling out to him; Denis brushes this off as his own madness, but in actuality it is Angela in ghost form. She explains to Denis that she did in fact die in the accident, but when confronted with the white light that was pulling her into the afterlife, she thought of Denis and their unfinished business, so she mustered the strength to turn around. She cannot explain how but now she's back in the realm of the living as a ghost; the light follows her, constantly pulling her in, but she is too afraid to face it alone. She tells Denis she will wait for him, that he can live his life as normal and in the end they'll go together. Denis agrees to this, but now Angela is back he decides he will live alongside her, as they would if she were still alive. The pair attempt to live out their romantic relationship as living and dead, causing friction in Denis's real life. The people around him view him as crazy and in need of help, which Denis refuses, leading him to be exiled from his own house. Now living alone as a hermit, Denis grows old with Angela, battling loneliness while Angela struggles with the fact Denis is feeling this way solely because of their relationship together. In his old age, living in a hospice, Denis is marked off as a crazy old man. He befriends Claire, an elderly women who also lost her partner and the only person that doesn't write off Denis as insane. Denis finally dies in his hospice room, alone in the eyes of everyone, but in reality with Angela is by his side. Before they pass together, Denis visits Claire as his younger self, hand-in-hand with Angela. Denis and Angela, now in the same realm for the first time since the accident, head into the light together.
