Ethan Roach has bounced around from commune to commune, living off the grid since a failed attempt at college. Now 39, he finds himself ex-communicated from this nomadic life for one too many drunken pranks gone wrong. With no place to stay, a phone call summoning him back to his childhood home to care for the family's ancient and dying dog provides a reason to ride out the holidays. As Ethan returns, he finds that his parents have become shells of their former selves - though their quirks have expanded into full-blown neuroses. Empty-nesters no longer, his parents now thrust Ethan into the unfamiliar role of care-taker, for the old dog, Bo Jangles. As Ethan begins to feign interest in being home, he rides out his days in a din of pot smoke and wasting time, until his older brother visits. Paul, who has been holding the bag while Ethan's been away, forces Ethan to confront the uncomfortable truth - that he left them all behind, As Ethan stays on past his initial visit, he reconnects with a former neighbor, now dog-walker, Jen. Her quirky and honest ways allow for Ethan to gain an ally as he forges ahead, trying to find his place in his family, and in life. Just as Ethan begins to work with his brother and connect more with his family, his former commune invites him back to the only place he's ever felt free. He must decide if the life he wants is free and easy, or complicated and messy.
