Fearing that they married too young, real estate tycoon Harry Jacobson and his infertile wife Karen are one last hearing away from finalizing their divorce, both of them unsure who will get Harry's money. Harry's idiot brother Joe, a college dropout, lives alone in his beat-up car and drums a plastic bucket on the streets for spare change, completely dedicating his life to his dream of becoming a famous jazz drummer. He is unable to provide for his loving, supportive wife Maggie who lives under the care of Harry and Karen, acting as the 9-month-pregnant surrogate mother for the soon-to-be-divorced couple's baby who they now want nothing to do with. Harry refuses to let Joe stay at his house with Karen and Maggie, insisting that Joe learn how to provide for himself. Unable to risk losing his wealth in the impending divorce settlement, Harry lies, convincing Joe that Maggie wants to divorce him because of his low-income career choice. Harry offers Joe more than enough money to pay-off his college debt and buy a place for himself and Maggie, but only if he kills Karen before the final hearing the next day.
