The business district situated adjacent to The University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa, Alabama is known as The Strip. Its history is covered here over the last one hundred years, with the focus mainly on the second half of the last century and how various legal and political rulings and maneuvers affected this quarter-mile stretch of road. The repeal of an antiquated state law in 1976 that prohibited bars within one mile of institutes of higher learning changed the social and music scene. Many stories are told associated with the stretch of roadway, which went from being a family-friendly area of commerce for students and locals alike to 'a little Bourbon Street' and now is something in between.
