In the late 1970s, Daniel Hirsch was a nuclear policy professor at UCLA. He and a group of research students found that three partial nuclear meltdowns had occurred at the Santa Susana Field Lab, and had been kept secret from the public. Jointly owned by NASA, Boeing, and the Department of Energy, the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL) is located just northwest of Los Angeles. Its surrounding community sees a 60% higher rate of childhood cancer than most of America. Ever since this discovery, a number of activists have been working to achieve a full cleanup of the site - but disagreement among these activists continues to delay the very cleanup they are fighting for. And to make matters worse, the site is located on sacred Native American land that has not been returned to its original Chumash inhabitants since being taken over by external entities. While community activists fight for their varying ideas of an effective cleanup, the Native American tribes work to ensure that their sacred artifacts are protected in the process.
