Mary Shelley's The Mortal Immortal is the tale of love-struck Winzy, an alchemist's apprentice who drinks an elixir which seems to make him immortal. Initially, immortality seems a dream come true. However,soon he realizes he is cursed to endure eternal psychological torture, as everything he loves dies around him- and he wonders, on his 323rd birthday, if he is in fact immortal (or merely long-lived)- and thus, who the true immortal mortal is.
