23 year old Tyler Murphy had spent the last six months playing the VR game Kingdom Of Reign, and not much else. His parents Bill, late 50's, a retired architect and wood-working enthusiast, and Karen, late 50's, an animal lover and shopaholic, are concerned about his future. They barely know him anymore, even though he lives in their basement. He seems to have no friends, no drive, and no life. So when Tyler dies suddenly of a brain aneurysm, Bill and Karen are left in the dark about who is and who he would've become. Karen blames the constant gaming. While returning the VR system to Scopes and Swords, a gaming store, they meet the manager Dean Kobayashi, 24, an Asian American goth rocker, and fledgling Twitch streamer. When Dean plugs in the system, everything changes. Bill and Karen discover that in Kingdom of Reign, their son is Aldross; a beloved, respected player with the highest score in the campaign. Dean tells them that because of the depth of customization in the game, part of Tyler is still alive. Everything he was as a person is stored in his avatar. Dean offers to take Bill and Karen into the game, but they only have six weeks to level up until the season ends and Tyler is lost forever.
