It's Ration Day on a Southern plantation in 1859. Upon entry into the Big-House, Girl (a field worker) bypasses the area designated for members-of-servitude, sneaking into Massa's bedroom soul-search before an ornate mirror. Mesmerized by the mirror, Girl marvels at her reflection only to trigger memories of Massa's repeated rapes, specifically the one producing the newest pregnancy. While Girl reflects on her past abuse, an unseen time traveling narrator gives voice Girl's silent thoughts. With the progression of Girl's story, Narrator no longer remains unseen. Girl seeing the Narrator compels the two to bond. Then, the unthinkable Massa, overhearing the two, enters the room confronting their insubordination.
