Set in a lonely dim room with a few bright spotlights, acting students stretch their bodies and voices to relax and warm themselves in preparation for their turn presenting in front of their teacher, Mr. Foster. A hardened Hollywood actor, Mr. Foster strongly believes in the Method's ability to fix any actor, no matter how terrible. Method actors treat their bodies as an instrument for their craft so that it can follow whatever impulses arise during a performance. Afterwards, some students cry, others explode in anger, and some don't feel anything at all. Chris is one such actor; a challenge for Mr. Foster. He pushes Chris to use the "Affective Memory" exercise; where an actor recreates a traumatic memory from their past, then releases the emotions connected to that memory and applies them to the scene. As Mr. Foster says, "What will happen is unpredictable..." Chris chooses a memory about her abusive father and begins to hyperventilate. Mr. Foster tries to snap her out of it but she lunges for his throat. He manages to push her off and she runs away, sobbing.
