Joel + Julia (2021)

A look into a couples relationship told through 3 separate conversations throughout their marriage. We begin with Joel waiting for Julia in 2010 at the diner. He's nervous as he's about to have "the talk" with her. When she arrives, the waiter gives them time to look at the menus and heads over to a different table where we see Joel and Julia again, but this time in 2015. They've matured, and so has their relationship. We get a glimpse of where their life is now, Julia seems to have just beat Cancer and Joel is ecstatic. However, the celebration has turned into a somber event as Joel and Julia have a fight. The waiter leaves them alone and heads over to another table, where, you guessed it, we see Joel and Julia once again except this time it's the year 2020. The energy in their conversation is very different than before, we try to understand what has made their relationship so cold and distant. As we follow the waiter back to 2010, then 2015 and once again to 2020 throughout the film, we try to piece together what was the breaking point of their relationship. At the very end, once we've realized what the straw was that broke the camel's back, we follow the waiter to a table we hadn't seen till now. It's Joel and Julia in 2005. It's their first date. We see the nervous first date energy as they both make jokes and flirt. However, this is interrupted by a visit from Joel (2020) as he takes revenge for what happens to the relationship in the future.
