A group of actors at a casting are met with a hindrance - they're all casting for the same role but with their own individual emotional expression. Without time to practice the casting starts and Trist/Sadness (the main character) quickly experiences the difficulty of meeting the casters expectations. The actors attempt to practice together, but Trist/Sadness has difficulties with finding his given emotion. His nervousness mixed with the caster's irritation towards the actors leads them all to go through various parts of the emotional spectrum. A pressed atmosphere is cleared when Trist/Sadness steps in for his last casting and afterwards joins the other actors in the waiting room.
