When an ambitious child psychology student, Tara Hines, visits a small college town to expand on her studies, a scheduling error prematurely lands her in the home of single father Carlin Bathell and his two young children. Upon witnessing their strange behavior, she's inclined to believe that the family suffers from a phenomena known as "parentification", a condition in which children take on the roles of the parents and vice versa. But her stay soon begins to suggest that there's much more to her theory than any textbook could reveal, as her path to uncovering the truth leads her to a disturbing conclusion that no one could have ever imagined.
