Film adaptation of the life of the actress Caroline Neuber. In 1717 Friederike Caroline left her parents' home with her lover Johann Neuber and joined a group of comedians. After their marriage, Caroline and Johann Neuber founded their own troupe. In Leipzig they met Christoph Gottsched, with whom Caroline Neuber reformed the theater and gave up popular traditions in favor of "high literature." She traveled with her troupe as far as Russia. She repeatedly prevailed against schemers, but had to disband her company in 1750 for financial reasons. Her attempt to work as an actress in Vienna failed miserably, and the war prevented her from performing any more. She died penniless in 1760.
