Layla is just another girl passing through the same struggles we as immigrants have all had to pass through to stay in the United States, only find defeated expectations and dreams, to be part of a family where we do not belong. Matters of the heart get brushed aside to do what is necessary to survive on this country. This is shown in the story through Layla's choice between Jake and Diego. Where Jake represents the 'stability and freedom' while shutting down Layla's true self. Whereas Diego represents Layla's past and a future that is no longer possible. Therefore Layla must choose to face the future alone or forever be caught in a false version of herself. We, as immigrants, want to carry the memory of our homes with us through our lives, but the truth is, what we remember as our home no longer exists. They are just memories. Once we accept that our land, our home, is within us and we can take it wherever we want, we will be truly free no matter where we are. To find happiness in herself, Layla will have to detach from her past and embrace an unknown future.
