Caroline wants to make french toast for breakfast. She finds other loaves of bread, but not challah. Her mother suggests they bake it. They never baked together until quarantined together. While waiting for the first rising, they don masks and go outside talking about their routines. Caroline's mother misses working at her office now that she has to work remotely, but Caroline is sad and misses her job as she is now unemployed and claiming unemployment benefits. Her mother encourages her to learn the lessons baking bread can teach hoping this would ease the feelings of stress, anxiety, and loneliness her daughter is going through. The challah has risen imperfectly. Undiscouraged, Caroline goes forward, painting on the egg wash in preparation for the oven stating heartily it's just another exciting day. Late at night, Caroline is cutting the challah and her mother joins her. Both eat the challah together in peace and acceptance of the unknown future that awaits them both.
