In West Texas circa 1900, cowboys are out on the spring roundup. Winter has passed but the nights are still chilly and evenings around the campfire is where everyone wants to be. Jeff Gore is not only a cowboy but fancies himself a pretty good musician too. When he arrives in from his nighthawk shift, he is greeted with a cup of hot coffee and urged to sing a few songs for the boys by Cookie the old chuck wagon cook. There are six other cowboys sitting around the fire. The cookie, hoodlum and ranch owner are also standing around the back of the wagon. The men each take turns telling of their tales of how they came to be cowboys on this ranch while Jeff sings the life story of each man in the camp.
