A school class follows their teacher into the mudflats and returns without him. Was he an irresponsible person who put his class in great danger and lost his own life in the process? Or did a few diabolical pupils take advantage of the situation to get rid of a hated teacher? Ann Kathrin Klaasen doesn't think so and initially lets the main suspect, pupil Laura, go. Laura leads her straight to her friend Sascha, who posted an advert for the teacher's death online just a week earlier. During the chase, Frank Weller falls from a scaffold and suffers brain trauma. When the teacher's body is recovered, Ann Kathrin is torn between her concern for Weller, her obligations to her son Eike and the case, which takes a completely new turn with the appearance of BKA officer Elisabeth Fädli. The body found in the mudflats is not the teacher, but a colleague from the BKA. Like Fädli and other colleagues, he has been assigned to 24/7 surveillance of Gerd Eichinger, a sex offender with a high risk of re-offending. The man was a ticking time bomb. Meanwhile, Laura and Sascha end up with the fugitive Eichinger, of all people, who has taken up residence in an aunt's holiday home on Norderney. The presence of the attractive Laura causes Eichinger to wrestle with his inner demons. When a stranger makes him an immoral offer that would allow him to flee abroad, the young people are in grave danger. Ann Kathrin is preoccupied with the question of what really happened in the mudflats. She sets her sights on the BKA officers. Even though her boss Ubbo Heide disagrees, she is convinced that they know more than they are letting on and that they are the key to finding the teenagers.
