If Laurel and Hardy were smashed together with the late East German playwright, Heiner Müller, HERZSTÜCK is what might likely be pulled from the wreckage. Equally inspired by old, black and white film comedies and Müller's 14-line theatrical fragment of the same name, the film follows a pair of doltish musicians as they attempt to perform a duet for violin and piano. A series of accidents, distractions and interruptions leads to gruesome complications, and hilarity ensues. A bleak, slapstick meditation on the futility of love and all human endeavor, HERZSTÜCK suggests a Three Stooges short written and directed by Lars von Trier.
