Sandra Nankoma a dark skinned female that grew up being bullied because of her dark skinned complexion grows up traumatized and later uses her talent as a musician to fight the stigma and also empower other dark skinned females. She also explores the beauty of existence through a continuation of the KADDUGALA PROJECT from which the "DARK ONE" film extends . Nankoma believes that everything looks beautiful in both "black" and "white" and not just "white" as the world would have us believe. Fitting in her skin as a black female raised in a Black Nation within a black community hasn't been a glove to hand situation. Society made her feel unworthy, the labels that came with her skin complexion implanted fear of rejection and many times she felt powerless, inferior, insufficient to self-love. The lies told to dark skinned children that they are less beautiful or special is a practice in her community religiously and subtlety. The question is why hate skin so much that it divides people of the same race? We should be open to have conversations about colorism to impact the minds not so open to change. Colorism has existed since during slavery in the 18th century. Slave owners apparently favored lighter skinned slaves with a perception that darker skinned slaves were not human enough. Light skinned slaves worked less and were not subjected to hard labor or harsh treatment. This so elevated the status of light skinned people in our ancestors' minds that some opted to intermarry with them in order to get better breeds that were considered 'beautiful Due to this history of segregation, women of color in her society were influenced to compare themselves unfavorably to lighter skinned women.
