1860. Mister Perrichon is the epitome of bourgeois respectability: a rich shopkeeper, vain and smug, brimming with social ambition but with morals that adapt to circumstances. He retires from business and, to mark the occasion, takes his wife and daughter Henriette on a trip to Mont-Blanc. They're pursued to their refuge by two suitors, Daniel and Armand. The Perrichons have no idea in what unexpected ways these two young men will change the course of their journey. First, Armand saves Mr Perrichon from falling to his death, then the latter protects Daniel, the perfect flatterer and better liked of the two, from danger. Who will win Henriette's valuable hand?
