Til Winter's End

As the first snow falls on a post-oil-rush North Dakotan town, a dead body in a barren creek stirs up past dirty deeds. There to investigate the execution style murder is James Setter (40's), a misanthropic and divorced detective still mourning the senseless loss of his young daughter. Across town, Duncan Randall (40's), strong and silent, receives word that an old running mate was executed. Setter and Duncan, passing each other at the widow's house, don't yet realize how intertwined their pasts and futures are. Duncan's old crew and his wayward, loose cannon-of-a-brother Ty (30's), gather at the funeral to ponder if and why they are being targeted. He is propelled into action when his own violent past catches up to him and his daughter is severely injured during a home invasion aimed at him. Setter's investigation leads him closer to Duncan's crew and tension mounts as he digs deeper into the case, but he is unceremoniously put off it by Ben (70's), the Chief of Police. Setter, still dealing with his demons, is undeterred and defies orders. He finally links Ben and Duncan's crew to Henry Williams (60's), a wealthy landowner now running for governor, and discovers their involvement in his daughter's murder as well. Setter confronts Ben and sets out to redeem his torn soul as an unforgiving Duncan seeks revenge. The two collide at the Williams' mansion, find themselves in an awkward predicament, and join efforts to make it out alive. As the dust settles, Setter grants Duncan the courtesy he never had, to say his goodbye to his daughter. The two men then quietly exit the hospital where Duncan is faced with his final choice; take the cuffs or take the gun, he chooses the latter and follows Setter out into the sunset and a certain fate.
