The Human Genome Project began as a public funded programme in 1990. It was to be a noble quest, its aim to sequence the 3 billion digits of our genetic code, writing out the blueprint for building a human being and unlocking genes connected with disease. At the helm of this worldwide effort was unassuming 'worm scientist', Sir John Sulston. However, when billionaire scientist-entrepreneur Dr. Craig Venter launched a rival, privately financed assault on the human genome, with the intention of patenting it, the biggest scientific arms race in history began. The outcome of this race would go on to effect the lives of every single person on our planet.
