South Africa, 1987: A story about three young punks who dare to be different in apartheid South Africa. The Boabab tree is a symbol of South Africa. It is known as the upside down tree. Adam, Ben and Francois are teenagers whose roots too seem to grow in the wrong direction. They are wannabe punks in a rural South African town that has no time for extroverted expressions of identity. In their eyes, the system slaps them down at every turn, in the form of their discipline obsessed school, hard-line church and unforgiving family life in a town where the rules of religion, respect and race are harsh, and harshly enforced. The boys have a dream. It is a dream that has made its way across the ocean, sneaking into their sleepy town on imported magazines and crackling cassettes. A dream of music, of Punk Rock, rebellion and revolution. A dream born in a place called London.
