In the late 1940s, Detective Rick Morrison is down on his luck. He's being evicted from his home, he's got no cases to investigate, no leads on any other work, and worse: he's out of bourbon. As luck would have it, RIck is visited by an old flame, and an old friend, Lauren Jones. Lauren informs Rick of a case she needs his help on, and isn't afraid to bring up the fact the last time the two met, Rick's partner Trowel was killed. Lauren invites Rick to meet up with her in the local pub for more information, and Rick is hesitant to take the case. Motivated by the promise of money and wanting to know why Lauren was so keen to bring up bad memories, Rick goes to meet her. Distracted by a couple of down-on-their-luck mobsters, Rick is confronted in a dark alley by Lauren Jones, armed with a pistol, and wanting revenge. Rick knows he's been cornered, and faces his death, chiding himself that he couldn't have seen this coming. Rick is shot by Lauren. Lauren, successful in murdering the detective, leaves the scene quickly in search of a drink.
