When Flora's mother dies at a young age, she tells her daughter's to live freely. This is not easy for Flora, who stays behind with her strict father and two sisters, especially when her father decides that he needs to find a suitable husband for her. Flora strongly opposes this, and thinks that she herself can find a husband. Her older sister Hanna, who has taken over the mother's role in the house, keeps a close eye on her. Her young sister Elsbeth, who is raised by Hannah, does also not make it easy for Flora to come out under father's reign. Flora tries to walk her own way in the midst of her family, struggles for freedom and true love and becomes the center of a rivalry between the noblemen Marcus and Edward.
