'Alonso, the Dream and the Call' explores the immigrant experience through the eyes of Alonso. Ultimately the film is bittersweet, leavening us contemplating the healthcare system, the immigrant experience and Alonso's actions. Wanting to see a doctor but unable to take a day off from work, Alonso contrives the most ludicrous scheme that would allow him to work while he waits for his number to be called at the emergency room. Thrown into the mix are his wife and son's expectations. In the end the unexpected occurs, reminding us that it is our dreams and hopes which make the difficulties of life worth living. Stylistically the film uses direct address and a non-narrative style to tell the story.
